More than 4.5 billion devices around the world are dependent on two U.S. corporations: Apple and Google.

Apple has a monopoly on the operating system and app distribution.

Google has outsized power over the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) and soon full control over app distribution.

Apple has the power to rug users and developers at any given time. The same goes for Android, with the upcoming mandatory developer registration and the progressive closing down of AOSP. Forks like GrapheneOS rely on Android remaining open source.

(The situation is different in China, but control is basically exerted by the CCP.)

What is the way forward?

I think forking AOSP once google changes it to the point of incompatibility, and going it alone from there. Maybe even having to stick to a release version indefinitely if no resources to maintain.
