Unfortunately, examples are made to remind people that there are two classes of people on Earth: those that are in control, and everyone else. Cases like this, which are purposely dragged on for years, tend to disappear from people's minds. The coverage is either suppressed by mainstream media, or is heavily manipulated when actually reported.

Similar to Edward Snowden, Assange may have completely dissipated from most peoples' minds (except on platforms like this). Given that there is complexity with the jurisdiction of his case, and the subjectivity of a term like "free speech," at least when applied to various governments across the world, this will likely continue to ebb and flow with attention, all the while weighing heavier on Assange's shoulders.
