So the whole #drivechains discussion is just to enable side chains? What exactly is the benefit of having a side chain? Why would I want to use it?

But if a L2 can be private why do we need a side chain? Not trying to be difficult, it just sounds like a lot of work and protocol changes to make a side chain work but I can’t seem to figure what we gain.

If it helps, DC democratises what liquid does. So instead of having to apply to the Liquid consortium, you buy into a sidechain project for the same speed. There are many other ressons. Another is, adoption of a present or future tech that would ptherwise need a hardfork to implement. Such as zcash or monero. Dc enables experimentation without threatening bitcoin core.
