Google records audio of what you're saying OFF the phone

I've seen it first hand. I was watching an old movie on TV, and suddenly android started showing me ads for this random old movie. Do you realize how much power this company has to hear everything going on around you? To manipulate you with custom propaganda?

This isn't some crazy conspiracy theory, Silverpush android developer plugins openly sells and admits to working with McDonalds to record audio through your phone, of your laptop's Youtube videos, and then use that knowledge to show you more Big Mac ads all over the internet. They are happy to abuse your addiction to give you diabetes.

That's what made me realize I had to finally switch to a DeGoogled phone. But most people don't want to do the work or spend the money. And that's why our team is offering to do it for you, at LESS cost.

Gotta love services like this--switching to #GrapheneOS is incredibly simple, yet for some it's just easier and less stress to have someone else facilitate the process.

Glad there are folks out there like nostr:npub14slk4lshtylkrqg9z0dvng09gn58h88frvnax7uga3v0h25szj4qzjt5d6 to help those who simply are uncomfortable flashing their phone.

There's really no excuse not to run a de-Googled phone...

Agreed, it's also good for preventing accidentally bricking the phone, since they have experience doing it.

That said, I'm not trying to play devil's advocate but if you use something like Tracfone (no KYC and pay-as-you-go, two things I refuse to give up), I'm pretty sure getting a fully degoogled phone isn't viable. I could be wrong but from what I read, it doesn't seem possible. The next best option is to download Shizuku and use it to run Canta, which lets you strip out a lot more of the spyware and bloat than normal.

Not sure what it is you're looking to do?

A de-Googled phone running #GrapheneOS essentially takes you out of Google's data collection.

The tricky part is to maintain confidentiality of your IMSI and IMEI...not sure how those are managed with a Tracfone, but both are mandatory, so both are present even with a Tracfone.

If you get a SIM from a Tracfone, would you be able to either transfer that SIM to your Graphene phone? Or if offered by Tracfone, could you obtain a virtual SIM?

Tracfone seems to only sell phones, not SIMs. I haven't tried transferring my existing SIM card but most new phones have eSIM only nowz do they not?

Many have eSIM...but not all. There are pros and cons to each. The question here is that to obtain a SIM from a carrier will you have to go through KYC? I believe the answer is yes, but I frankly don't know for sure...

The SIM (and the IMSI) identify the user of the phone (i.e. your phone call and text destination). Assuming that a "burner" phone has a SIM that is not attached to your identiry? If so, then a phone with a non-KYC SIM running #grapheneOS would seem to be an optimal combination.

But (for most?) that would entail getting a new phone number (and I think that's likely unpalatable for many).

If the sim isn't KYC'd, the plan will be. That's why I stick with Tracfone, you just buy the phone, add time and go.

I'd love to go for a custom ROM like Graphene but Tracfone tends to favor Samsungs (and I have to say I vastly prefer their hardware to Pixels). I figure for now, my solution of using Canta to get rid of a lot of the spyware, while replacing as much as possible with FOSS alternatives is the best avenue for me. If I could afford to have a second phone, I'd just get a separate one for privacy purposes but I can't afford to even upgrade my phone (which is technically EoL) let alone buy a second phone.

Pixel hardware has the best security infrastructure (which is why it the preferred choice for Graphene). I wouldn't hesitate to purchase a Pixel over any other phone currently in the marketplace.

My objective is privacy...and for that, there is no better choice than Pixel and #GrapheneOS

(You really should try it--there will be some great deals on Google phones on Black Friday - expecting a nice deal on Pixel 8s and any 7s they still have in stock. I may upgrade my wife's phone at that time...)

I've seen and held Pixels, they're butt ugly and don't really feel good in the hand, IMO. I'm not able to afford a new phone as it is, even on sale, so I'm just stuck for now (as unfortunate as it may be).

dude

you're using Tracphone and complaining about the feel of Pixels 😒

What are you saying? Tracfone usually runs with Samsungs now...

Hmmm...all phones kind of look the same to me, and I always have a case on, so...

One thing I don't like about the Pixel is the on/off and the volume buttons are too close together, and (especially with the case I have) I often turn the phone off by mistake.

And I really don't like the virtual keyboard that comes with #GrapheneOS (although I understand they're working on that).

And yet, I've owned iPhones as well as stock Android phones in the past, and I have to say I've been most happy with Graphene.

One of the biggest plusses is battery life--without all the "bloatware" and spyware from carriers and from Google / Facebook / etc. that are "loaded at startup" and always on, I find I really never have to charge my phone during the day. It's been a revelation...

Just sharing my experience (good and bad)...

No worries, I appreciate your input. I might go this route someday but I'm not giving up Tracfone for it lol, so if I do go for Graphene, it'll only be if I can confirm with them that Graphene works with their service.

Hmmm...don't expect it'd be an issue. The carrier's service is tied to the SIM card...looking at their website, they support Google Pixel and GSM, CDMA, 4G LTE, and 5G.

They check compatibilty via the IMEI, so that's based on the Pixel hardware (not software). You should be all set. 😃

Good to know for whenever I upgrade, thanks. Just concerned about effectively ruining the phone if it ends up NOT working with Tracfone regardless.

Well, if you don't like Graphene you can always just download the Google image and reload that...back to a normal Pixel...(or Tracfone).

It's not that I think I won't like it, I'm just concerned something weird will happen, whether in their TOS or something like that, especially since everyone's moving to eSIM.

Well, Pixels have both eSIM and a traditional SIM slot--you can run either (or both simultaneously if you want 2 lines on the same phone). 😃

Wasn't aware of that, I appreciate the info and will look further into it! I won't be able to afford a new phone anytime soon though, so I have some time to look it over.

There are a couple reasons why I can't get a fully degoogled phone (next-best thing is to run Shizuku and use Canta to strip out as much as you safely can) but that's a great offer for people who can!

we do have older models such as the 6a for very low cost

If I have the cash to spare in the reasonably near future, I'll take a look, thanks!

Anything on pixel 3 imei/serial change?

we don't carry the pixel 3, is that what you're asking?

it's possible to change it via software, but you need a new good IMEI to replace it

That thing of Google is listening is a really "old news", unfortunately. The Google Pixel phones are really expensive. For whom that wants a really viable alternative, I suggest DivestOS: https://divestos.org/pages/devices

Huge fan of GrapheneOS, but it is a bit ironic to have a Google phone in order to get rid of Google

all the options are bad, you could get chinese phone with lineage but that doesnt make it any better

I can confirm that these Pixel 9 GrapheneOS phones are sweet! I bought one from him and love mine.
