My favorite hockey tournament of the year - World Juniors (16 - 20yr) is underway and concludes with medal games on Jan 5, 25.

Having visited Riga, Latvia this past summer - #Nostriga and Baltic Honeybadger, I'm enjoying Team Canada vs Latvia. The Latvians were certainly the underdogs but have played a brilliant defensive game. Out shot 47 - 21, Latvia scored 2 clutch goals on the powerplay to play the favorites - Canada to a draw in regulation time.

5 min overtime 3 on 3, Latvia out shot again 9 to 3, had a rare OT powerplay but couldn't capitalize.

Into the 5 round shout-out, it's anyone's game.

No decision

Next 6 of 10 and the 16th shooter - for the win.

Congratulations Latvia! 🇱🇻

Third ever win in regulation round. Well deserved.

Caught the last end of the game. The Latvian goalie was clutch and they played really well despite wishing for a Canadian ‘W’.

Did you see the defensive play where he lifted his leg while sliding on the ice to block the shot, and another defensive poke check? Two dandy plays.

🏒

I did see that play! 🤯

That's 2 Latvian goalies I've watched now, that have performed way beyond expectations. Arturs Silovs - third stringer for Canucks '24 NHL playoffs and this kid Feldbergs.

Regardless of the outcome Dec 28th (Latvia v USA) this team can call this tournament a sweet success already.

I don't think they're the dark horse favorite. They likely scouted Canada and knew enough from the guys playing one another in Major Jr to prepare for this game. Massive lift for their confidence.

You know more about it than me even though I still play. Those plays were clutch and fun to watch.

The game stats for Can vs. Latvia is insane minus this game. I like the underdogs getting better/winning a bit. It makes for better tournaments.

Who’s the favorite this year? I am out of the loop big time.
