It’s always the charges! My MacBook just recently went to the island of lost laptops that can no longer hold a charge. So sad :( 
I replaced the battery in 2011 MacBook Air a few months ago and flashed a lightweight flavor of Linux on it. It’s like a brand new machine. Kind of amazing and perfect first laptop for the kids.
I’ve done this too!
Swap out the battery for the spare one... oh wait, nvm. Nostralgia got to me. 😏
