What if balkanization of social media is a good thing? What if scale is inherently unstable? Not for technical reasons. But for sociopolitical reasons. What if that's what's really going on right now?

I think balkanization is good, but we would still benefit from a common standard. with nostr we can have right-wing and left-wing relays and people can just use whatever they want.
