Interesting thought.

I would say it depends on the situation and your strategy.

Example:

In a not yet developed market environment that you yourself will not be able to develop alone, sharing "insights" might draw competitors that help develop the market. And in the end, everyone might benefit.

Sure, there's nothing wrong with that. But if you were on an island and happened to discover an old treasure, a chest full of gold, would you then post the coordinates of the find?

And if you are a consultant and you know an important component or solution to a common problem that people would pay for, would you also just reveal it publicly like that?

Hehe. In both cases you describe I would agree with you.
