Exactly, people should grow up and stop crying for censorship whenever they don't like something. If you feel trolled etc. block the person and go on. If you're not able to do this, stick to censored services ike Twitter.

Something something sticks and stones 🤙

I suppose he was saying that nos social will be like this, but you can just not use it and you can even build something different out of it. On the other hand it might be setting some sort of trend of how things are built. I'm not sure. I'm not smart enough to know enough. I just came away from the presentation with mixed feelings.

Yes, checked out his client website and it sounds absolutely like they push censorship. So won't try or recommend this client.

Maybe I suppose it felt quite dated, 'straight white males' mention for example. It was all bordering on 'safe space'. But skirting around the term. I think everyone is tired of culture war terms, it's a trapped loop culture is stuck on for yonks now. Pro or anti I feel like everyone is tired of it. What's wrong with a mute button?

Absolutely. The presentation as a whole was great. He has some great knowledge and new ideas, but I feel differently on heavy handed content moderation. It will start as something to stop death and rape threats, but will quickly turn into a tool to silence speech that someone doesn't like.

Different clients will have different policies, and it will play out in the real world. I just hope Nostr doesn't turn into another censored echo chamber for some people, while offering freedom to others.

Look at the fediverse to do understand what this will lead to.

Nostr has become cucked by the community it attracted, and those all in on free speech will only be able to push back for so long.

I'm staying here regardless, up until I'm forced off.

Currently: Why can't you just mute a user, why does it have to be 'reported as inappropriate'? You might want to mute content just cos you don't care. I've found some 'show anyway' posts which I assumed must be a spam bot, but turned out to just be a user (who I assume) multiple people blocked. I couldn't even unblock them to see what their notes feed was like. Maybe I was using this wrong, just a noob

On Damus you can block users.

I'm on amethyst and you can block/report, but I feel like a Mute function is needed maybe. It feels like blocklists are already here? And it's not just for spam accounts which would be fine. Again, I'm new and I can be reading it all wrong

When I block a user it only affects me. The blocked person can still see my notes and comment etc. but I will just see 'This is from a user you've blocked' and if I want I can then click on it to see the message. At least for me, that's all I need. I'm an adult and decide on my own what I want to see and what not. Don't need moderation to "protect" me.

I agree. Again the issue isn't with nos social, it sounds like we just won't use it. But I'm more curious if this is a wider trend. What is nos social other than a curated block list? Do I really want to research founders to see if they will curate a block list? I suspect in this particular example he would find things offensive which I wouldn't or would have no opinion on even. Only really significant as a wider trend, but curious

If you watch the Nostrica stream, you'll see that he is eager to implement broad censorship; enforced via relays and clients asap.

I see, I probably didn't understand enough. My vague impression was of a social network which was actually more restrictive than current twitter, so why bother being here if that were to come about(?)

More restrictive than Twitter?

I mean what he described as his client sounded like it would probably block a lot of what is currently allowed on twitter

Possible. I think it's just important that we as freedom of speech supporting community speak up and vote by ingoring anything that's goes this route.

You'd think/hope that this would be guaranteed, but who knows.

I don't expect you to know but it made me think in the scenario proposed what if I were following a wide variety of users, one/some of which are on this Curated Offensive Blocklist, would this add me to it by connection..? Anyway, it sounds a bit shitty and hopefully has little/no support
