Folders is a very interesting idea. And they are just NIP 51 lists, like follows. We could activate lists for the DM screen as well and let you filter friends by lists.
Then we need a very good list manager client.

Is it possible to assign people to lists when you follow them?
Not yet, but it's coming
Adding to Profile lists should be given more priority in the UI of most clients. In Highlighter, I'm literally integrating this in the "Follow" button. With "Following" automatically checked and being just one of those lists.
In the end, I want to filter the whole internet based on those lists, not just DM's.
Search would be great too. Essential for someone who is flooded by DMs.
