I’ve always said the relay data thing is a red herring, most media is unoptimized, some people have 50mb profile pictures for example. This is where all the real data usage is coming from I suspect.
yes it helps, it stops auto downloading pictures and videos and a few other things.

Limiting that or forcing an image proxy for large images in low data mode is smart!
Atproto has a limit of 1MB for all images (and the size is 2000x2000).
