I see that there are different opinions about what is considered success to nostr. Is it censorship resistance? Privacy? User adoption? Slick UX? Overtaking centralised competitors in popularity? Venture capital funding?

Does nostr have an ethos? Does it have a culture? Compare it to bitcoin.

What are the important pillars of nostr?

What is the core mission?

How is it determined if nostr is on the right track? What is valued? What is success? What is failure?

What is the line that shouldn't be crossed? (Ie. In bitcoin Big blocks vs small blocks, 24M cap etc.) When is nostr considered compromised?

Nostr could do well to develop some anti fragility to clarify what it is and fortify its white blood cells.

The core property of #nostr is that it is a permissionless protocol; any relay may join. (Analogous to Bitcoin's decentralization). In this light, banning relays would mean fundamental failure.

I don't think privacy is a central element, our data is out in the open, even moreso than when posting on mainstream platforms because there it is behind closed doors (they have an incentive to protect it in order to better & exclusively monetize it). However, the fact that anyone can create an nsec/npub without any kyc does benefit privacy.

Success (IMO) means that a significant portion of "public square" conversations are held on nostr

I like this one.

I don’t think there is a simple answer here. Everyone wants something different from it. As long as it helps achieve these goals for the individuals, it’ll be fine.

Another factor is sustainability without external benefactors, or a dependence on few individuals. We could probably draw some parallels with Linux, and potentially learn from that.

I would also argue that having a strong leadership for the protocol is essential to its success. 🐶🐾🫡

Single point of failures is important to actively work away from. 👍

We are in the critical moment now, and we all need to work toward that, regardless of benefits to the self! 🐶🐾🫡

At the end of the day, it's a protocol.

What gets built on top of that protocol is evolving in a free market & on a non existent budget.

I'm eager to see what surfaces.

I’m terms of scale, the fact is that not all the bitcoiners are active or even on #nostr. Some were seduced by the inflooencer dopamine of twatterX and aren’t getting that fix here.

So most likely in the next bull market another wave of orange/purple-pilling will occur and there will be some melt when the tide pulls out again.

An open question is what other community comes in that is purple-pilled en mass first. I’d love it to be gamers, but as much as I love that community, they seem to flock to centralized platforms and already are getting their needs met.

Maybe some community that seeks open source file sharing, like the jamband/festival music crowd?

We shall see…

Freedom of speech (permission-less) is the strongest reason to be here.

This is what makes the difference to any other platform and analogous to Bitcoin being trust-less.

Bitcoin = Freedom to own property, capital, wealth.

Nostr = Freedom of speech, thought, concepts.

Economically aligned with laissez-faire capitalism.

Politically aligned with republicanism protecting the individual.

Philosophically aligned with enlightenment individualism.
