My husband WAS a journeyman union Ironworker off and on for 20yrs. We are in California and live rural. The compensation with all the bennys was really nice but not what the private market could support so the only places he put up were government builds and as soon as those jobs are done everyone gets laid off and if you are not a legacy then you just go up on the board and wait sometimes for weeks and even months and you ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SEEK OUT WORK and if they find out you have a side hustle for yourself welding for farmers on the weekend or something they can penalize and kick you out of the union.

Its a complete circle jerk of the government and union.

They constantly push the left agenda and really pressure you to vote that way and it's very easy to be ostracized if you speak against it even in the littlest way.

The teacher's union is a nightmare! My husband had a pedophile teacher in grade school and when it came to light he was moved to the high-school where he worked for 15+ more years and retired with full bennys! Just sick

Yes exactly. See my other comment. They aren't inherently bad but they are a symptom of a broader problem. Namely not enough fair market competition. This is exactly what has led to inflated cost in healthcare and education. Government has a monopoly on them.

Again, I agree with the lack of free market being a big issue for me.
