How fucking hard is it to make a good movie nowadays?

Zero good movies being made.

Someone do something about this. Now. Go.

Haven’t watched a new movie in years. All seem like a waste of time.

💯

Wokeness killed Hollywood. They don’t even make comedies anymore.

Matt Damon had a great interview answer where he talked about how streaming and digital media has changed the investment thesis of the industry and lead to much lower quality content

The TLDR was that since there are no CD sales, anyone the financial lifecycles of movies is much shorter and they are more incentivized to make cash grab “blockbusters” and politically charged movies instead of telling compelling stories

CD sales anymore* god damn typos

that’s where AI tools might be interesting, get approachable enough for individuals/small groups to tell independent stories without the massive budgets and without the massive studios, let it be janky and low production values, who gives a shit about that stuff if the story is well told and funny as fuck and innovative aesthetically

Good writing makes a movie 100% of the time. Writing is an art. Good writing is hard to do but appreciated by true movie people.

yes I agree, and AI isn’t doing good writing yet, that’s for sure, I’m thinking more about the opportunity for telling stories visually and AI tools for this are definitely getting to an exciting place. Have been making some visual stories lately and incorporating animation, and it’s promising (and I went to art school, am artist and designer and believe me it helps to be an artist to get good results from AI!). But the tools have to be open source and freely modifiable without guardrails.

🤝🫡🤌

Yup & fuck that shitcoining Matt Damon.

“I’m Matt Damon” “I’m Matt Damon”.

Can’t make them. Funny is funny & nobody is making anything funny.

Stand up comedy is in a golden age rn. Ik its not movies but still cool media

Stand up comedy? Who?

And don’t say Shane Gillis. That guy bugs me.

Bill Burr has had his balls removed.

Chapelle is meh now.

Chapelle

He’s alright. I liked skinny normal Chapelle.

Chapelle show was some of the funniest shit I’ve ever seen.

Key & Peele old stuff is great too.

No good movies are being made. Because remember Hollywood got caught fucking little kids.

Ahhhhhh, right. That. Good point.

We need an open source Hollywood. Nostr movies.

godzilla minus one was legit good i thought...probably the best movie i saw last year.. 15 mil to make and the director did the vfx himself.. puts the stupid ass WB godzillas to absolute shame.

definitely a theatre movie but thats probably not possible anymore.. anyway i recommend if you missed it 🤙

I heard that about Godzilla -1.

in an age of endless, terrible remakes from Hollywood, Toho put out a really good, modernized version of the original godzilla from the 50s. They did it right.

I don't watch new movies anymore. It's a waste of time usually. At this point, I'll watch one 5-10 years after its release if people still talk about it. And only completed shows. Too many shows get rugged nowadays or drag of forever as cash cows.

Same with video games too. New games are just too hit-or-miss.

When nine out of every ten "new" movies is a remake, can you really say they're still making new movies? 👀

Very good point.

A Bitcoiner needs to make The Mandibles and do it right. Open source project. I’ll act. I’ll act the shit out of it.

Hitting AMC for a good movie was a pretty good night out back in the day.

Perfect date night. No talking. Just sit & watch some quality entertainment.

I just went on a watching spree of movies from the 90s. Great era for movies. Most movies now are unwatchable.

100% unwatchable. And my wife & I love bad movies. Bad good though. Like a horror movie that’s so bad it’s funny. They can’t even fuck up & get it right.

Dune was OK. Liked it. Jordan Peele is Ok too, some of his stuff.

Otherwise shit.

David Fincher, Tarantino, Bong-Joon Ho, Denis Villeneuvue still making classics

🤔🧐🤔

Parasite? Once upon a time in Hollywood? The Killer?

Parasite was outstanding.

Parasite was good.

I will tell you the secret of a good story. The secret is that nihilism kills movies. If you're a person that thinks fate is sealed, you will make horrible movies. The only thing needed to make a good story is recognizing that your life has meaning and that every action that you take at any moment matters.

Nihilism is at its maximum when you crave a socialist dystopia and you believe that you are the most intelligent being in the world and you consider yourself a sort of god (that kind of delusion comes when you are able to change the rules of the world without consequence). Then, fate is sealed for you and you suck at making movies

Many writers are completely detached from normal society. Call it whatever you want. Nihilism is fine.

Are you referring to today's world or a general historic context?

People can be nihilistic, but the result of feeding this too much is called the evenly rotating economy, an economy where everyone knows the future and no one gains or loses anything. But it should be clear that we don't live in a world where everyone knows the future, not mattering how detached from reality a person is.

I meant calling it nihilistic is fine. Not that nihilism is fine.

How high does the Bitcoin price have to go, for bitcoiners to start their own movie studios?

If I had to guess, streaming most likely changed the business model. Spending multiple years writing and producing a good movie probably doesn't make any financial sense for them, anymore.

The optimist in me thinks we have a golden age of movies, right around the corner, due to AI. It's only a matter of time until we'll be able to create movies from our computers by ourselves, just by inputting prompts into the software. Creative people will crush the Hollywood pedos when that happens.

It’s like a sandwich. I can make my own, sure.

But when my wife makes it for me it just tastes so much better.

I want movies made. I don’t want to make them. Unless I make them for large distribution so I can get genius credit & make millions of SATS and then get a big award on a stage.
