Several months later and we still don't have good tools besides saying using WoT relays. Which is great for OGs, but not great for all of the new people joining that have zero WoT.

The last wave hasn't been bad enough. You could filter out account names or keywords. But this attack is new pubkeys with random words. If the solution is "use paid relays only" it might be a turndown for newbies.
i used to fight spam like this, but i was overrun by changing methods. so i set my sights on this can be fixed by ⚡
anyone that runs a free relay is spending a lot of time, and then when its attacked like this, bye bye all your users.. happened to me #nyebot
invite vouchers. send an invite to fren, pays for one relay membership.. they dont use it, clawback the cashu. i think this is the way, combined with wot. 🙏
i like invite starter packers or vouchers for small and one on one type of invites, this doesn't really help solve the issue where someone naturally joins nostr on their own.
it can though because look how much zapping happens in introductions..
and how those are just one pubkey and not thousands..
