I was about five when I convinced myself Santa was bullshit. I resented the people who kept telling me the lie too.

When my kids were young I refused to perpetuate the lie. I didn’t burst their bubble early, but when they started really pushing I didn’t defend the lie. They took it very hard.

I wonder how my life would have been different if the much more defensible position of the story of Saint Nicholas had been the focus and background of the gift giving tradition rather than the magic elves and reindeer. 🤔

I don't know if a 5 year olds brain has the amount of abstract reasoning required to make that conclusion.

It seems like it haunts you.

It doesn’t haunt me. It’s just an example of situations I wish I had better narratives to lean on over my life.

I threw out the baby with the bath water early on in my life and I rejected all ancient stories and considered them just as ridiculous as the story of Santa.

The story of Saint Nicholas is much deeper than that.

So you're saying remove the magic crap, and tell the factual story of the original legend.

I like the idea. It stinks less of gluttony and consumerism which falls better into Austrian econ.

Yeah, or at least celebrate the original story of Saint Nicholas all along and let them enjoy the modern version in its proper context.

As they get older the real legend can be explored more deeply and the magic bs can take a backseat as they grow out of it naturally.
