But, also, a lot of software is made genuinely for free, either by nonprofits (ok, in this case individual developers are paid) or by absolutely BASED hobbyists and activists.

This includes both a massive amount of rarely used software rather specific for practically any situation (which is really useful when you do need it) and some widely used programs and libraries.

Hobbyists and hackers are what we need.

Another one that simply knows nothing about free software. 😃 Running Gnu/Linux and Android, LibreOffice, Nostr and Fediverse apps, etc, without knowing that it's free software. Accessing countless web pages and services without knowing that they are running free software. The world is increasingly full of idiots. I'm beginning to suspect that this is a plague.

Are you referring to me or OP? I am very well aware of what free software is and I was describing OP as "Another victim of the English language" for his confusion.

However, I also simply pointed out that, besides being free (as in "free speech") software, a lot of software actually is developed with no monetary interests, as well. It doesn't have to be, the "free" doesn't mean "gratis". But OP is wrong to imply software isn't developed without monetary interests, too.
