I do this in a modified form.

I ask kids to jump on the side of the cart in the store. I don’t put them in the cart, as they are older and it is too dangerous if they stand up. Side stand is fun for kids, keeps them mobile and safer as long as they don’t decide to step off while I am moving. I instruct them to get the moment I stop.

This way I can move faster than them.
