seriously contemplating it if I can be bothered to learn how to emulate a phone on a laptop I guess, the phone's increasingly walled gardens is becoming kinda... sad to watch in real time.

Google Voice. Fairly easy, I do it all the time. All calls and messages come through to my computer, and I use my bluetooth headset with it.
