laptop only here

⚡️

Nope. Replying from phone.

😂

Why would you do that?

Not sure what is Jack’s thought but for me personally, smartphones seems more enslaving. As a smartphone user, we are at the mercy of the smartphone platform holders and app developers. I wouldn’t be surprised if some people have the urge to ditch the smartphone for freedom.

Nope. It’s now a body organ

lmao real

I'd be more upset to lose my laptop suddenly than my phone - or a kidney.

Mostly on laptop 💻 using nostrfreaks.com

Ditched laptop for mobile only

the nsa thanks you

lol

No but it's not a bad idea to try that, I prefer to use primal on laptop for optimal Nostr browsing experience anyways.

A dumb 5g phone that bridges would be nice. That can tether, USB, Bluetooth or wifi.

Keeps me from making that leap.

Also hard to not enjoy what I always wanted my palm pilot to do.

the main point would be not having the cell hardware in the device

compartmentalization, different devices for different things

I use a dumbphone. But I have never thought of using only a laptop. Because phone numbers are required in so many places and I won't be able to call emergency vehicles.

Not yet. What clients would you recommend for that? And why?

I’m 98% mobile. I’ve used Primal on desktop a little though.

I've tried going down the rabbit hole of making a pocket sized Linux PC that could replace my phone, the hardware isn't there. Serious question jack, you thought about starting a semiconductor fab? There are ways to acquire the equipment and expertise outside of going straight to asml/lamb/gigaphoton if you know who to ask. Finding buyers for the silicon seems like the biggest issue, I'm sure a high percentage of people here would want anything produced, but you would presumably need to move tens of thousands of units each just to justify the lithography masks.

I’ve notice myself migrating more towards the laptop in the past year

No. Unlikely to happen here

For the last, I dunno, 8 years mebbe?

I want to

I would truly like to. But HAM in addition. Still have the landline.

Nope. If anything I’d rather just have my mobile.

Sounds crazy

I’ve been thinking about this

you would have no way of knowing -

Definitely for some things. Moving more and more that way since I started running my own home server.

No, but a minimalist launcher with only 6 apps on home + clock & calendar helped me a lot.

Try Olauncher for a week and then a month if it wasn't that difficult. Not gonna lie living out of X was also a good move.

Something you can put in your pocket will always be option one.

considered but concluded it's counter-productive...better to mold phone to be less addictive than avoid entirely. change launcher to emphasize easy access to healthy apps, don't install some apps at all, etc.

Why would you do that

Getting close

First device to go none blue light will be my default

Vice Versa fren!

💻——->📱

This is the way

Librem5? Which laptop?

https://nexdock.com/ there are a couple others out there like it at different price points but the nexdock has been really solid for me

Laptop for reading all notes and posting notes with just text. Mobile for posting notes with images.

No

Forced to use a mobile for work, trusty x230 for everything else. When you're travelling anywhere in public and see how much of an addiction they have become, makes you think twice. Must be near on impossible for younger gen's to give them up seeing as though they have them from the moment they start annoying their parents.

Tried, but there is no 10-11in Mac anymore.

Also, new phone cameras are too good. Small kids, lots of photos all the time.

Hard to imagine being without phone camera, mobile music/podcasts, or map apps. Could definitely live without the social stuff

I would think a larger number of folks have gone the other way.

Basically. I use Apple Watch with LTE and leave phone in basement on charger. I ditched iPads and really only use Watch and laptop. Just wish there was a GrapheneOS-based smart watch.

I have tried that but I am so bad at directions having a map with me is nice. Do you use a cellular card? Or you saying you just use it at home / wifi.

Soon

Two things that really trap people in to the phone

1. Camera

2. Always needing to be connected for work

5g has been a complete scam. Tax funding for the ability to pin point people at all times with 0 benefit to the consumer. We paying more for the privledge to be spied on.

I try to find ways to just use my mini laptop but society always finds ways to make you carry your chip aka the smartphone everywhere.

I kinda wish I could. I'd have to be clever to get away with a dumb phone and laptop only. Too many things require mobile phone.

I ditch laptop for desktop only

I never use a mobile for anything ... run a harden debian laptop

Shut up slut

Does it exist? I have a lot to learn you yet

Can be in a romantic way

I'm using my PC right now

Size as a deterrent? Or something else?

nope

I only use phone when out of the house.

I use my phone way more than my laptop but whenever I do sit down use my laptop, I’m happier because it gives me better UX haha. I should really use my phone less.

I’m thinking of it.

yes. this has been an epiphany for me. primal as a constant open tab kills everything for me.

No. Gotta call my mama!

I would like to go that way if for no other reason than my typing abilities have gone to 7th circle of hell shit since I first got a smartphone. And I hate both unintentional typos and auto correct.

Going the other way...

Cool! What do you use it for? I’m also interested in the spectrum 🤓

That image is from the Librem 5 blog... I use the same setup for secure communications. The nexdock is also useful attached different SoC boards or mini headless setups.

How long before your phone in your pocket is simply reflecting on your lappy

Screen?

> have any of you ditched mobile phone for laptop only?

Yes, I use [JMP](https://jmp.chat/) with Gajim for sending SMS and making phone calls, and I carry my laptop with me pretty much everywhere. I currently stick to Wi-Fi, but I'm considering buying a [Pocket Reform](https://www.crowdsupply.com/mnt/pocket-reform) with a modem so I can use cellular data too. That would be really expensive though.

This is my first post on nostr so I'm not sure if this will work or how I'll see my replies.

That’s a negative.

It is now a third hand/external hard drive for my brain 🧠

I’d like to be able to, one day though 😅

i did and it feels great! the best thing was to remove email access from phone. try it!

i removed most app, no social media on phone, no time wasted doomscrolling, responding, reacting to things that don't matter. And everything becomes more real and it feels great

Very smart!

Impossible.

According to various researches, users prefer more and more their mobile phone usage than a laptop/desktop (currently it is approx. 50 : 50).

This trend is increasing with incoming young generation and we can predict the small devices will soon be a clear number one.

No way! Need GrapheneOS.

friend of mine never went mobile phone, laptop only since the beginning to this day.

Wow! Sounds great! How do you talk to close friends and family? Carry laptop everywhere? Keep it open always? With a headphone? I feel curious to learn.

Yeah…. Always 🤓

uninstalled all apps for web only, the only thing I need is payments and maps rest I am fine losing.

Mobile phones emit less blue light, but it’s usually closer to our eyes 🤔 never mind

yup using old nokia phones and using iris on laptop

The first step is to leave your phone at home

Trying PinePhone. Learning real tech skills again.

No!

Can't ditch it completely. Need it for login verification and stuff.

I'm trying to do so....but turning out so hard, with work demanding MFA all the time and a zillion other things that expect you to be using a smartphone :(

working towards wi-fi only devices

I switched to a dumb phone (manufactured by Lava), a 13inch laptop and a tablet for reading and art. Has been working great for ~2 years now.

Interesting. Why not just laptop?

I like to walk around outside and talk to people on a ultra portal device.

This has been my main setup for a year.

actually put an iphone to the left and android to the right of this chromebook 10e by lenovo and am able to solve most issues and can toggle between my three brains…

Keyboard is microsoft designer compact.

I started with two chrome tablets (which seem to be end of life) primarily because they run linux.

And was acknowledgement of my final cloud stuck in, google…

The first one was pure chromebook and the 2nd one was ripping out the software stack for pure linux ;) left that one in portugal in a suitcase…

And these chromebooks good because can use usb-c to hdmi cable to screen when in hotel rooms globally.

I am considering switching my I phone for a dumb phone as well… just for calls and texts on the go.

We need a dumb flip phone option that has the lightning network built in to it??

And then yeah everything else on laptop?

I did .. It is my third year running .. Never missed the smart(er) device :-) though whenever I travel to India , I have a mobile phone there ..

I am bold but I am not crazy :-)

amazing

Love that thought

Tried and failed. I need it for translate, maps, payments and occasionally phone call/msg. I’m actually glad everyone I meet in my travels do not speak english. Fuck that language colonization.

Think more feasible is ditching phone for a celular smart watch with minimal notifications enabled. Want to ditch wallet and cannot imagine taking a laptop to use pay for things in stores

Je fais le contraire

If the problem is security or privacy then I tryed out this setup:

phone 1 security:

LineageOS or GrapheneOS with SIM card and only Signal installed plus the other preinstalled apps (calendar, camera, calculator etc). Of course you have to keep it updated.

This setup allow me to use a phone for calling and chatting only with my family members or closed friends. With this setup I personally use the phone at minimum, just when I really need it.

phone 2 privacy:

There is something I missed (navigator/maps, browser, wallet etc) so I did a second phone, a privacy oriented phone (with LineageOS or GrapheneOS) without SIM card. Airplane mode always on and only WiFi, everything is torrified. Navigator with offline maps and gps on (OsmAnd~).

With these two phones setup I have phone 1 for my real life, secure. phone 2 for everything else, privacy oriented.

Consideration:

- I would like to have a linux phone (a device like my pc to keep with me) cause i can have real pc privacy and security.

I think the question was not about security and privacy but detox from having a phone to keep real life and connection first.

I thought a lot about this and I think there is something that I would miss:

- calls from my family/close friends (impossible to have a pc always with you, wifi connected with signal or something else)

- navigator/maps (i tryed old garmin navigator but it's crap and maps are updated annualy i think)

I would love to have friends that doesen't care if i don't answer the phone for more that 12 hours but now people are worried.

I personally think that the closest and smartest way to detox is having only a phone 1.

optional having phone 2 with offline maps.

Tips:

- with PC you can emulate android apps if you really need

- for two factor auth you can use a blockstream jade or an offline old phone to keep at home

I have a question for you nostr:npub1sg6plzptd64u62a878hep2kev88swjh3tw00gjsfl8f237lmu63q0uf63m if you want answer.

Do people in your position buy a secure phone for family and close friends? If yes do you trust that people keep it clean and updated?

I was thinking in the future about giving an additional linux phone to close friends/family, just to keep my close connections secure. I want to have root access to these devices so I can update and manage everything. I don't trust their security setup, most of them now have android outdated and who knows which keyboard or bloatware installed.

🦸🏻‍♀️

No but this could be a game changer for me

No but this guy has never used a cell phone https://stallman.org/stallman-computing.html

No what is this 2009 ?

I was just talking about this yesterday regarding the question of Apple hardware... sick to death of hardware that doesn't do what I want.

I have two phones, neither have replaceable batteries, one has swollen due to being sat in a hot place for too long, the older, crappier one doesn't work with charge-and-data adapters so I can't use it as a range extender with ethernet/usb adapters, I have two different ones, neither can be used on the old phone without exhausting the battery every day or so, and can't be charged concurrently.

Neither of the phones let me swap out even the operating system, let alone use the hardware how I want to.

My next phone is going to be VoIP and use a condenser mic and its inbuilt analog sound output, and be stuck to my desk, and not one milligauss of microwave radiation kthx bye.

I couldn’t not use a phone due to calls, but the Light Phone seems like an interesting modern take on a dumb phone. Calls and messages, with a E-ink screen. It can also play audio files and set alarms but that’s abou it.

cool design, will look in to

No

nostr:npub1sg6plzptd64u62a878hep2kev88swjh3tw00gjsfl8f237lmu63q0uf63m is there anyone working in blockchain supported medical history through #nostr communication

And if there’s some body to teach us health professional on more efficient use of nostr

Keep the good work the future looks good on you. !

About to try that. I've ditched mobile apps for desktop app so far

Yes for most things, it's at leat great to not be smartphone dependent for privacy and productivity reasons. (Easier to handle distractions on desktop/laptops)

Ditched laptop 4 years ago

I work on a laptop only and started to experiment with going out without phones lately.

One thing I have realized so far is how simple it could be when arranging to meet, just say a time and location, and done, no need to have endless discussions by texting or getting updates, but this approach is not working with anyone.

Nope.

Laptop is more expensive.

This is not true

I got a refurbished thinkpad x1 for $200 and installed linux. Runs like a dream, only regret is I didnt get it sooner.

I also use a pixel phone with GrapheneOS installed which I use the Amethyst app to access for nostr.

I like this idea. My old eyes need a larger screen

For privacy purposes?

I would like to, but it is hard to get my friends to use email or nostr. Most companies like the PSTN system.

No way :)

yes. Sometimes I forget my phone at home Andy friend said I’m like a grandma

What happened with tablets ? 😂

No, but I have thought of disabling my sims/mobile data and going wifi-only for calls and data.

No. I swing between phone, iPad, and laptop.

Thinking of, especially after X

I watch whatsapp, telegram, nostr, ... on the computer.

But without the phone I couldn't link whasapp, telegram to the computer and I couldn't use my bank on the computer (they always send sms).

I wish I could get rid of the phone.

Interesting idea. Would probably make me more present and engaging in personal conversation.

reviving my dumb phone. pura vida. pure freedom.

I tried a while ago dumbing my phone down to a bare minimum, no apps, no nothing.

Unfortunately work still anchors me to certain apps, only available on smartphones.

But this idea resonates a lot with me. I love my laptop, waaaay more than my phone.

Just my good old desktop.

Nope

I wouldn't mind only if my laptop had a two day battery, and I can use my smartwatch to call

seriously contemplating it if I can be bothered to learn how to emulate a phone on a laptop I guess, the phone's increasingly walled gardens is becoming kinda... sad to watch in real time.

Not feasible on 3rd world countries like mine. It's the other way around. Always has been.

Thought about it, but the UX for paying LN invoices on a go isn't great...

MacBook

I just use a pinephone and Framework laptop.

https://www.pine64.org/pinephone/

https://frame.work/

I don't believe in vendor lock-in.

I ditched laptops for tablets :)

Yeah, for a year, then I needed a Square device so had to get a phone again.

i could manage easily with 5G and whatsapp calls

Still using whatsapp? Why not SimpleX?

it has voice calls?

yes, it does

desktop only. iris.to

feels better on a big screen to me.

Only laptop for me

A tiny laptop... 🤔isn't that a fab flip?

My crypto portfolio needs a mobile phone 😒

At my desk I only use a PC - Linux flavour 😉

i wish i could - no secure internet connection available. using oldest phone with modem i could find - bit of home brew - not ideal and still very dodgy but eng's do what we can with what we got to hand. what about you ? dont say tmi youll freek me out Mwahahahahahahah

Not for social media but for anything else yes

For Nostr you mean?

Yes Primal + nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm is the key.

Social Media on the phone is a only a distraction.

Yes and it's minimized my time wasted on scrolling, by 50%

Not entirely, about 90%. Use mobile to transact BTC & LN and also to demo nostr when I’m out & about.

I find it healthy to not use my mobile when I am face to face with humans 😉

On mobile mostly cus need horizontal position. But on Linux laptop when serious. Why?

Not yet but I've been seriously considering it.

but then, what would you do for a camera? 😂

Trying to

Couldn’t get my keys to work on snort

Negative.

Hell no

We are blue collar plebs dude. We don't sit behind a desk. Stack Sats.

Yes, a few years a go I replaced my smartphone with a flip phone.

Not yet but I thinking about it

that's definitely something to consider 💡

I can't use Laptop while I am poop 💩 so I prefer phone instead 😅

I use Punkt. MP02 and laptop for work only.

Gradually deleting some mobile apps & reclaiming some off-screen time for 1-1 conversations.

As a native desktop user, I don't know how anyone can live on mobile phone only in the developed world, its a very small and limited window. Understandably, its different in undeveloped places.

That's a very interesting perspective that I never considered. I use my phone to look up info when i'm on the go or call someone.

A mobile is great for onboarding people to Bitcoin and Lightning.

I ditched my phone for a phablet long ago.

Yes, but only for nostr use unless someone can explain how to use without exposing my private key...

no… it’s nice to have maps

and apple wallet

for nostr yes; also any focused/productive web activity

Différents devices according to the things and the activities

The winning trio: TV + LT + SP

What’s SP?

No - neither the iPad

If I could carry a larger device, I would ditch the phone. My RSI and muscle strain is killing me.

Phone here 📱

Same

No

Would ditch phone if tablet had cellular (voice).

No, i need a computer that i can carry around in my pocket.

That’s a good idea to prevent distraction

I always have my laptop nearby.

actually been doing it way more often

some years ago this would be way more cumbersome, but laptops are incredibly light nowadays

and while their versatility is still superior to mobile phones, they are catching up

would be a dream come true but wife wont allow it 🙁

laptop fired up. 🤭😂✌🏻 just haven't needed it.

the real one. 💻

but do you have an anti-radiation defender shield for your laptop? that's the real question.

Not yet

that's your next purchase.

What about a razor?

what for?

rather opposite - almost stopped to use my laptop, as almost everything can be done on phone (besides work)

Can’t, I’ma trucker so my phone is essential

Is it because of distractions? I carry the mobile phone less and less with me, very close ditching it…

Wow. That’s a thought.

And I was proud of myself for ditching X.

To be fair, the “X” made it easy. 😂

More inclined to do the opposite

I miss handheld/pocketable laptops

What was the pocketable laptop?

👀

I missed my Vaio P

The mini laptops…like 8” screens. Was a really quick fad 10-12 years or so ago.

GPD makes some cool pocketable laptops like this Micro PC and the Pocket 3.

I liked the Sharp Zaurus SL-C* line the best.

I think I still have one

Me too, but the specs are not good enough for use these days

the irony of the digital vagina: it's not supposed to be functional and only meant to be decorative. lmfao.

Potable ou portable !?

That reminds me of my old Palm I used to have. It had a metallic blue and silver case. Those where cool times.

Why? Nope!

I Have, for the most part. Feeling like taking back control of my time.

Considering ditching the modem from a mobile phone (e.g. PinePhone or Librem 5). Application development can be offline-first, as with most desktop apps. Portability is retained.

nostr:nevent1qqsqnu3juq2yh2ps5fet68vdf328km95usytqveyulg56vrnp7gueysprfmhxue69uhhyetvv9ujummjv9hxwetsd9kxctnyv4mqygyzxs0cs2mw40xjhfl3a7g24ktpeur54u2mnm6y5z0e6250h7lx5gpsgqqqqqqs7j87df

I once tried iPad mini only for a while.

I feel the phone format biases towards frivolous usage because its just too small to be productive.

Now that the seed has been planted, I want to!

Its a bit impractical in the pocket of my trousers

Do you mean for just Nostr stuff or for everything?

i have. my phone is mostly for calls only now
