Even if the retreat of the epicureans to the garden outside the gates of Athens, to the kepos, bears traces of escapism, this doctrine remains one of the first dazzling departures of human humanism and libertarian thought, in that it directs the focus of philosophical contemplation towards the individual and no longer only towards the polis community.
