Lots of rapeseed oil in central and northern EU as well, not only sunflower.
I think US paranoia with diet comes from the stupid amount of sugar, and thousand other shit, they get in absolutely everything. In EU is quite bad, and getting worse, but over there its been bad for quite some time.
