Some say we are approaching a post scarcity world thanks to robotics, AI and other technologies that are on the rise. A world where scarcity is no longer an issue - where goods and services are produced and distributed automatically based on demand.

This could potentially eliminate the need for traditional economic systems based on scarcity and competition. They would simply become obsolete over time.

What could the role of a scarce asset such as bitcoin be in a post scarcity world?

It would be more important as a means to store value because everything else could depreciate with decreasing cost of production.

If we assume human life itself will always be limited by our lifetime - ie life itself is scarce in terms of time - it means humans will always have a need to guard their time, to trade their time, to spend their time. This just means that we need some type of absolute and standardized measurement tool to measure all of this with. Thus, there will likely always be a role for bitcoin.
