Well its not free but we credit you the cost each month so really it is. Blah blah. Then I hear new phones all have tracking on them ? Wtf. So since this group is very techy. It’s obvious you like android. What android do you recommend? I have tmobile. I can get s refurbished phone online, what are your favs? And also my handle is the same for my dupes. Google Pixel. It's the most open. Then, you can get all nerdy and run a custom operating system on your phone if you'd like for maximum privacy and user control.
Carriers are scams. I usually buy direct from Google or would buy a used phone from Swappa. I know the Swappa owner.

I have a oneplus 7t from 2019/early 2020, can't remember, that is still working perfectly fine for me.... i don't play games or stuff. It also has an open bootloader on it so you can do like derek said and later on when and if you want, you can install an operating system of you choice. There are plenty of degooglfied options out there.
Another good thing about getting an open phone is that there are projects that keep them up to date security wise after the manufacturer stops. They either force you to buy a new phone, or walk around with a bunch of vulnerabilities.
I switched after 12 years of an iPhone to a google pixel phone, and I am running GrapheneOS on it because I didn't want Apple or Google to have access to all the parts of me available through my phone. I would consider myself extremely mildly techy compared to the general public, but compared to the people here I'm fully illiterate. It was super easy to get up and running myself.

I personally went and bought a Samsung outright. $180 tax in from wallmart 🤷♂️ I'm not going to be taking pictures of the craters on the moon anytime soon lol but the up side is Samsungs are very easy to repair your self and the parts are affordable so that means if you have to use a repair service you know their price should reflect that as well. Keep in mind even iphones having tracking software and stuff. Glad your considering Android 😉
