Frens, I need some hardware suggestions for a full node + lightning node...

We'll soon be flying home for two to three weeks and I intend of using the time to set up a full node when I have 4 stationary walls.. ^^

RaspPis are crazy expensive rn so that doesn't really make sense I believe. I do have an old Pi3 lying around but I think it's only the 1gig RAM model which will be insufficient from my understanding.

I intend on running Umbrel on it, rudimentary Linux skills already aquired but eager to learn more about it and intend on doing so until we're back home (installing ubuntu via VM on Mac rn and got myself some more literature -> suggestions welcome btw).

Will set it up behind an OPNsense FW (hardware recommendations welcome again, was thinking about a Protectli box?) which will be set up in the process as well.

I'm not a coder/developer but a doctor (albeit a pretty geeky one...). So no "self-built server in a 19" rack"-suggestions please... in the future, yes... for now, no. ;)

I don’t have enough experience to answer your question, but I can show you what this Pepe looks when you’ve only partially scrolled through the post

😂😂😂

Yeah I was scrolling at work and like ohhhh shit nsfw hahaha

🤣🤣🤣🤣 holy shit I’m cracking up.

😂 me too man every time I see it too

Pep noooooo

Not gonna lie... that was fucking funny tho.

I laughed aloud here

🙏⚡️

Yeah was thinking about on of those already. i5 and 16gb enough?

I'd say even 8 gb ram is sufficient.

My config is pretty much simple - Bitcoin core, indexer, mempool, Samourai dojo.

That's it 😉

Have a safe travel.

Thanks amigo! 🙏

What OS are you running btw?

Debian.

Ubuntu is ok, to.

Good to know. I thought umbrel was a Linux distro itself… good, so I can just run it on top of whatever it seems. 👌

Do you run it hooked up to an external hdd/ssd? Or does it make sense to spend the bucks and get it with 1tb internal?

Get a mini-pc , intel nuc ..for example I use a beelink

Thanks for the suggestion, will look into them. 🙏⚡️

The best part with mini-pc/intel nuc ..those can be upgraded. I do recommend to get a ssd , preferably 2tb.

Internal or external sufficient?

I use it internally, but can be used also external.

One option may be https://mynodebtc.com/

On Linux, can be in a virtual machine on a windows PC. Get a 1 TB SSD USB drive.

Thanks for the suggestion. They seem pretty expensive tho… also I’d like to tinker around with it a bit more than just plug and play… the more to do yourself, the more to learn. 🤓

+1 for Protectli. I ran both OPNSense and a node on it for some time as virtual machines but admittedly it was on the slow side.

Now I have an old Lenovo Thinkpad i7 for my node and other self-hosted stuff. Cost about $300 and it’s a beast. The battery is like a a built-in UPS 😉

⚡️thanks.

Yeah I somehow don't like the idea of running both things on one machine.. one because I don't have a proper understanding of the whole compartmentalisation (is that even the proper word?) and two because I don't trust the security model if I'm not fully understanding what I'm doing and rather distribute it to a specific machine other than the FW itself.

Didn't even think about a laptop yet but the battery as UPS makes complete sense to me. 🤙

Yeah there’s different ways of doing it but I agree that if you’re new to this, keeping them separate is going to be the way to go.

I have a sysadmin / DevOps background so I’m more at home with VMs/container. My setup is probablt way over-engineered for what I’m using it for 😁.

For the laptop I got this model and replaced the SSD with a 2TB one: https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Thinkpad-Display-i7-6600U-802-11AC/dp/B08WT481PQ

Yeah you do have a slight advantage there. 😂

Thanks a lot buddy, I'll have a look. Did you swap the SSD internally? Was that hard? Or just plug in an external one?

Internally, not hard at all. A small scredriver is usually all you need. Youtube will probably have a how-to video for whatever model you end up getting.

If you decide to go that route and run into any issues/questions, feel free to hit me up!

Thanks mate. 🙏

I’ll dive a little more into hardware as well… seems like the protectlis have also appreciated in price a little…

Alrighty... small update...

To try it out I got Umbrel running on my Mac... was a bit more complicated cause I'm running an M1Max MBP so I had to virtualise the whole thing in UTM.

I installed Ubuntu server and the GNOME (because I'm a noob) and got Umbrel to run.

When trying to install an app though, it's just stuck at "installing". It says it can take a few minutes but I don't think that means over an hour for the Element server for example...

Any idea what's off? Does it have something to do with the whole virtualisation/hardware issue or am I missing something? I do have a connection from the server (reaching other websites) so it seems weird that umbrel isn't able to download (?), install (?)...

I've had a similar issue when I did have proxmox ve installed, and not enough resources allocated. I don't know exactly on your setup, I boosted your note maybe someone encountered this problem.

❤️ thanks. Don’t think it’s the resources… it runs pretty snappy and I have it 16gigs of ram… anyhow… let’s see…
