It amazes me how quickly the chickens empty this dog bowl. I will fill it up in the morning with biochar and by the evening they have emptied it. I only have 10 birds right now. #biochar #grownostr #chickens #permies

Curious, for someone who has no idea about raising animals... what is biochar? How is it made? Why is it better for the chickens?
Biochar is basically charcoal made typically from wood. It is made by burning wood with very limited oxygen. That way the volatile gases and such burn of and the carbonized structure of the wood remains.
Feeding it to livestock has shown in studies improved growth performance, better egg yield, ability to resist pathogens and a reduction of methane production. The high absorption capacity of biochar also aids in the removal of toxins from the animals and the farm.
Biochar is amazing at absorbing and providing controlled release of nitrogen compounds when activated in animal waste, then tilled into soil. Why municipalities aren’t doing this with wastewater treatment systems is beyond me.
wood charcoal? Not familiar with the practice.
What a gorgeous feather lady. I have 10 hens myself, and I have trained them to be little puppies. They recall, fetch ball, jump loops, play piano and even play apps on the phone. Not even kidding 😂
