Curious, for someone who has no idea about raising animals... what is biochar? How is it made? Why is it better for the chickens?
Discussion
Biochar is basically charcoal made typically from wood. It is made by burning wood with very limited oxygen. That way the volatile gases and such burn of and the carbonized structure of the wood remains.
Feeding it to livestock has shown in studies improved growth performance, better egg yield, ability to resist pathogens and a reduction of methane production. The high absorption capacity of biochar also aids in the removal of toxins from the animals and the farm.
Biochar is amazing at absorbing and providing controlled release of nitrogen compounds when activated in animal waste, then tilled into soil. Why municipalities arenāt doing this with wastewater treatment systems is beyond me.
