Ebonyi community rejects peace pact report
==========
The people of Effium, in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, have rejected a peace pact report issued by a peace panel headed by retired Catholic bishop Rev. Michael Okoro. The rejection is based on the claim that the report infringed on their fundamental human rights. The war between the two communities of Ezza-Effium and Effium began on January 21, 2021, due to a leadership tussle between two factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers. Efforts by the past administration of Governor David Umahi and the Federal Government to end the war were unsuccessful. The peace pact report was described as apartheid and a violation of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria by the Ezza-Effium Consultative Assembly. They rejected the aspect of the report that labeled them as tenants in Effium community and barred them from producing a traditional ruler. The Ezza-Effium people called for a ceasefire and the return of residents to their homes while issues relating to revenue and other matters are addressed. They urged Governor Francis Nwifuru to revisit the peace pact report and other relevant documents to ensure the restoration of enduring peace in the Effium community.
