I feel people posting illegal content is going to bring great challenges to the Nostr Protocol. I wonder what the best approach is. π€

How can we have a fully decentralized protocol that is also safe? Seems like there's a balance between safety and control.
what is legal in one jurisdiction is perfect illegal in another and vice versa - LAW IS RELATIVE !
I don't want to see child porn / slaves being sold / other grotesque and disgusting content.
100% - just block/mute them - anything u dnot liek or support. that doesnot mean nostr principle need to change or policed. there is always political/cultural greyarea / redline what is wrong or right - rebels become law when is power n viceversa spend time in jail
I feel whatever relay it is on, the person running the relay will be responsible, because that is there server "property ", so technically, if you allow and keep content that is illegal on a relay your hosting. You can be charged by the law 100%.
anything u mentioned which is 99.999% annoying by mass consensus will be BLOCKED by relay admins for sure - legal/illegal won't matter
child porn always leads the debate doesn't it? How much child porn have you seen on nostr so far?
I've seen AI generated CP about a hand full of times and also images labeled as incest. Right now we are in the early days . When Nostr becomes more busy/traffic it could become a larger problem. It's better to figure out ways of keeping world laws in tact.
I donβt see any of these. Who are you following? Do you see them on global?
Global, which is why I've moved to follows/hashtags, seems to fix the issue 100%
Yeah. It is a sewer.
I know and realize I can just avoid Global, but Global will scare a lot of newbies away.
nostr is for adult grown up people who makes own choice - it has no nanny sitter tools - neither they r needed. so parents should guide children to candy store, same it true or internet.
global / plebchain is place when user to pick or new friend outside their known circle - FILTERING useless ad / obscene material there is a user task.
π― damn right!
Yep, and that renders almost all of illegal in the first place, the laws I mean
People posting illegal things on line will get caught by the law, I hope we all can always post free and assume the consequences if we are doing stupid shit.
If someone post someone's underage photo online, there should be power to remove it. Law enforcement can take a long time to remove inappropriate content. Speaking from someone who used to do web hosting technical support and safety.
There is already crazy shit going on on the dark web for years.
But if you want to start a law enforcement on Nostr to protect kids, go ahead man, I would support the persecution of that type of activity.
Interesting to hear people's take on this, explain a lot about an individual
So far, society has only been able to fix it using ID and threat of violence. Truly interested in how it'll play out anonymously and without threats
People also don't realize it's even easier to be tracked and caught on Nostr vs centralized social media or anywhere else . It's all open source. Your IP is seen by all servers, relays, and isp. So hopefully some good will come out of this, and some evil figures get put away.
with great freedom comes great responsibilities including self-moderation of the content you see or do not see. What's illegal and who defines what's appropriate or not? Also something illegal in one country may not be in another country. Such as drugs in video games in Australia for example.
The level of content filtering I'd accept is algorithms that are activated by the user to filter THEIR nostr experience or to make their timeline "family friends"
Anything else is censorship or a group of people assuming the role of moderators who decide what others see or do not see and that's unacceptable because any group with that kind of power on the network will start dividing the users into factions because tribalism is what we do.
There will be nostr clients and relays that will be much more strict on the content that is allowed. There will still be clients like the ones that exist today that almost everything is allowed, you will choose where you want to hangout.
That's the perfect Answer. Really appreciate the take. And agreed.
Illegal in which nation state? Nostr is a permission-less protocol.
While I feel there is content that is very distasteful it is not up to me, rather the individual relay operators to police their own in and out flows.
Open free networks cut both ways
Great point. All responsibility is on the individual relay operators. This is why relay operators as there relay becomes more popular, they will need to hire moderators to help ensure illegal content is not staying on the server/relay. Is there a way on amethyst I can see what relay a note is residing on? This would help determine which relays I should have download turned on or off.
Content review. Rules. Freedom is all about respect. βΊοΈ
