I noticed that most of the 100 push ups a day people are NOT former military and there is a reason. The most common surgery for soldiers at about 5-15 years of service is rotator cuff surgery.

You want conditioning from push ups do one that takes you 1 full minute to complete. Of do as many as you can with your lungs empty and do those slow as though you are doing heavy lifting on the bench, slow up and down. Say 10 seconds down and up each. 5 Would take 50 minutes and you ain't starting out that high with empty lungs.

100 a day is a recipe for repetitive motion injuries. People get carpal tunnel from using a mouse or splicing telecom cables, think about it.

I know this may attract hate but talk to any guy that spent time in the Army or Corps and just ask if they knew any guys that had shoulder surgery and why they had it. I am not saying to not work out for the slow kids. I am saying most fitness fads are generally not well thought out.

#100pushups

200 squats till 200k. Don’t fade leg day.

Yup. I saw that trend and noped the heck out of it.

Yep, I've got a bad shoulder as it is and one sure way to aggravate it is pushups. I do some from time to time, but a lot more planks and static stuff.

Does 20 push ups a day hurt?

An alternative would be doing bench press (or any exercise) with very light weight for one set of some chosen number of high reps. That can be done daily because there is minimal muscle tearing. This also makes your connective tissue get stronger, much like he described in the OP, but without you gaining muscle faster than your connective tissue can support it, which could cause injuries.

Exercise should be looked at as a marathon, not a sprint

Thanks for the advice

I mentioned focusing on form

I got 🔥🔥🔥 alive in replies

I conceded as this is purely a challenge.

Some of us may sustain injuries

Some may quit

Some of us may not make it

The rest of us will be a little more jacked by 100k. The ones left standing… we’re all getting girlfriends 😇

If you don't have a girlfriend now, doing pushups won't fix that.

The leverage and mechanical strain on a 1 minute push up is infinitely worse than 100 push ups. Your glenohumeral capsule would argue this from a physics perspective

When I started I could not do 100 pushups on the ground. I’ve been doing most of my pushups on an incline off a desk, counter, or staircase. After 32 days I’ve lost about 10 lbs just doing pushups and walking.

100 second push ups (planks) are definitely better for conditioning but if you want ro take this idea even further you found it in the breath. Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations) are the way to build your spine into a weapon and it is a discipline better than only pushups (imo) you can do 100+ sun salutations per day (i do 108 in a row 4 times a year )but the point is that the whole body should be stretched to gain total body strength and flexibly, not just arm and shoulders

TLDR: goto yoga instead of the gym

burpees are working great for me. I use push up bars to minimize wrist strain and a keep my arms close to my body to minimize shoulder stress. I am recently retired military which if course doesnt mean shit.

Empty lungs is the key.

In fact… a slow controlled exhale will demonstrate why. Exhaling gains access to core stabilizing inner tensions.

Exhale for stability.

During any activity.

Try it.

As a massage therapist, I agree.

Very often I get Patients with ripped or scared tendons in the rotary cuff, because the pectoralis muscle is tight and shortened in length.

I did almost a decade in the military and I HATE pushups. I never do them. Instead I do the chest press with resistance bands. One set every other day. That's it.
