Wasps or hornets can sting multiple times, don’t have to self amputate, and their stinger doesn’t have the barbs as far as I’m aware, so it’s more like a needle than a hollow harpoon 
Fascinating! Is a honeybee sting more painful? Now I'm wondering if I've ever been stung by one. Looks gnarly 😬
