This took me a couple of minutes - the answer is 10+7. The left side shows 8 in the box + 9 outside the box. The right side shows 10+7. That’s the only way this makes sense. What a confusing question!
8+2+7 = 10+7 = 17
8+9 = 17
IIRC we were taught a similar system in primary school for multiplications: 27x9 = 27x10 = 270-27 = 243
*(27x10)-27= 270-27 🤦🏼♂️
8+2+7, the idea is to break the addition down in a way that makes it easier to calculate. Agree that the wording is confusing.

My kid is not in school yet so I may change my toon but at this point it looks like this assignment is supposed to teach a problem solving technique first, not just spit out the correct answer. Homework assignments like this should include a description for the parents perhaps.
