Defining the box is hard. There was a Cambrian explosion of P2P apps for file sharing and communication in the 2000s that were "social networks" of a type, but that was before "social media" existed. XMPP and Usenet were both similar to nostr in ways as well. Freenet is another good example.

Poor user experience. These apps were out-competed by other apps that frankly worked better and were easier to use.
