Does someone has a brief (not too technical) history of the previous attempts to create something like /similarish to Nostr social network ?

I don't know if anything entirely like Nostr was tried before, maybe SSB, but I'm not an SSB nerd and don't know much about it.

If you don't need a blockchain angle search for MacGirvins friendica & red networks, also diaspora, gnu social & mastodon

Defining the box is hard. There was a Cambrian explosion of P2P apps for file sharing and communication in the 2000s that were "social networks" of a type, but that was before "social media" existed. XMPP and Usenet were both similar to nostr in ways as well. Freenet is another good example.

And in your opinion which is the main driver / reason of adoption failure of these previous iteration of decentralized social networks solutions?

Poor user experience. These apps were out-competed by other apps that frankly worked better and were easier to use.
