I was asked once why I say "Maths".
Why do I say it plural?
Well, because it's short for Mathematics, not Mathematic. Maths.. Math.. same shit.

Of course it's maths. Bloody yanks ruining MY language
Mmm... it's tricky. How can i explain it? 🤔
Anyway mathematics comes from μαθηματικά which is plural, so you are right. Sometimes you can use singular in some cases, like for example you could say "this is a mathematic problem", but you could also say "this is a mathematics problem". So... it is tricky...
Do the British treat similar words in the same way? Do you also say "econs" as a short form of economics?
