I was asked once why I say "Maths".

Why do I say it plural?

Well, because it's short for Mathematics, not Mathematic. Maths.. Math.. same shit.

Anyway mathematics comes from μαθηματικά which is plural, so you are right. Sometimes you can use singular in some cases, like for example you could say "this is a mathematic problem", but you could also say "this is a mathematics problem". So... it is tricky...

😄 In the end, they're the same thing. If the person understands it, it's still correct.

Btw μάθημα means lesson and mathematics took that name because it was the main lesson

Do the British treat similar words in the same way? Do you also say "econs" as a short form of economics?
