Anyway mathematics comes from μαθηματικά which is plural, so you are right. Sometimes you can use singular in some cases, like for example you could say "this is a mathematic problem", but you could also say "this is a mathematics problem". So... it is tricky...

Btw μάθημα means lesson and mathematics took that name because it was the main lesson
