Great video from Naomi Brockwell on why you might want to ditch your SIM for better privacy; how to do it, the benefits, and downsides.

See comments for the additional steps I recommend (hint it involves 2 phones :)

Ava, do you know a good way to get transcripts of youtube videos without logging in?

Video, even at 1.5x, is a very HD channel, and my life has limits on bandwidth...

Sleep time. Will reply tomorrow.

2 phones:

One you keep inside your home network, a Pixel with #GrapheneOS, (WiFi only) guarded by home network hardware Protectli firewall with always-on VPN, no mobile connection EVER.

The other, a travel phone (Pixel + GrapheneOS), always-on VPN, connecting to #Calyx hotspot, turning it on and off ~5 miles from your home at the same random location EVERY TIME. No exceptions.

what if you work 2 or 3 miles away from your home and need a phone while at work?

Great video, informative! Side note: Iโ€™ve always been curious as to why GrapheneOS chose a google device to be most compatible with when some are trying to de google and/or are anti-google. I look forward to checking it out when I get rid of my iPhone soon.

Pixel devices are currently the only devices that meet GrapheneOS strict security requirements.

Ah, so itโ€™s like a manufacturing thing. Thanks.

I would never support CalyxOS because they're linked to the cultural Marxist movement (RiseUp /BeautifulTrouble dot org). The raised communist/socialist fist in their logo raised suspicions . . and sure enough .

Instead I use a GL-iNet LTE portable router with a hack to give myself unlimited hotspot for $20/month.

Explain

Would love to know how to accomplish this myself.

Do you know of any guides, or how-toโ€™s?

This looks like a good start, but curious more specifics when using the lte router, and how to anonymize yourself with the lte contract.

This is really overkill unless you're in a sensitive situation or career

And disable ble

mobile devices cannot be trusted.

I would say no less than 5 phones, and a minimum of 2 with an old Nokia to play the snake game under VPN. And old typewriter. Also 5 spare empty bottles to send encrypted messages with lemons juice.

I have a similar setup. Thanks for sharing. I've never hear of Naomi Brockwell before. What a great channel. Thanks for sharing

Awesome yw :)

Watching this with no sim in my phone ๐Ÿ˜ although I do have a temporary eSim activated. I wonder if thatโ€™s just as bad.

Naomi is a privacy rock star!

She rocks

This has a TON of great information!!! I knew a lot of this already about cell phones and privacy but I am now seriously thinking of becoming a Calyx Institute member and getting an anonymous hotshot and dropping my cell down to wifi only! It just makes sense. Convenience is a LIE!!!

No phone from last four years .. I started using one last couple of months just for testing #nostr clients . .. of course without sim ๐Ÿ˜

If you have a GPS device for navigation in your car , the usecase for phone is really limited .. everything you can do on a laptop .. and you should anyway not take calls while driving

For calls at home , I use Google voice .. directly from my tablet or desktop .. though these days , everything is on zoom or teams ..

Best part - you save 30 dollars a month that you may use to #stackSats :-)
