*How bad is the history of the Argentine Peso devaluation since 1970?*
The following is a graphic view of the value of the Argentine Peso compared to the Dollar since 1970.
At the current exchange rate of 1,000 pesos per USD at the "blue" market, if the Argentine currency of 1970 was still in use today (the "Peso Ley"), you would need 1x10E14 (100,000,000,000,000) Pesos Ley to buy one single dollar - the Peso Ley was the currency in use from January 1970 through May 1983.
But how big is this number? Using single Peso Ley notes, it's astronomic!
It is equivalent to a cube of paper of 471 meters to the side. Close to ⅓ of a mile (0.293 miles). The Eiffel Tower is 300 meters long. A cube 1.5 times the Eiffel Tower height!
For the Argentine readers: it would cover the whole city of Buenos Aires with a carpet slightly taller than ½ meter (almost 20 inches)!
For the American readers: you would need 99.6 Empire State buildings to house all these one Peso Ley notes!
And finally, for the astronomy inclined readers: one note on top of the other would let you make 14 two way trips to the Moon!
A novel view of the horrific history of the Argentine official currency.
