Thanks. I do have Google Text to Speech installed, and it shows as selected, but doesn't work.

Some are based on old school hard-wired text-to-speech data while others use LLMs. eSpeak NG is an example of a more old school one with basic functionality. If you want something better there are options. LLM ones improve quality but hurt latency.

Please try a FOSS TTS - and thanks for trying it out!
Sherpa is a great choice
Got Sherpa installed. Works well. Thanks. Two suggestions:
1. Include some form of onboarding to install an engine. nostr:npub10r8xl2njyepcw2zwv3a6dyufj4e4ajx86hz6v4ehu4gnpupxxp7stjt2p8, this could be an interesting feature: recommended add-ons or dependencies.
2. Clarify UI for engine selection. If only one option exists, it will be selected, however, I only stumbled on needing to tap it anyway to confirm selection.
nostr:nprofile1qqs83nn04fezvsu89p8xg7axjwye2u67errat3dx2um725fs7qnrqlgzqtdq0 dependency management would be great!
We'll add some UX for making this clearer soon.
Thanks for the feedback!
