Relay operators can ban you from their relay! For example: if you will post porn and I don’t like it, I will black list you on my relay and your notes will not be there. That’s why it’s important to run your own relay, so you control what you want to share with others without a fear of censorship.

Ok. I think I am starting to get the jist of it and the different layers. Probably should read up on the whole structuring of how this whole thing works to fully grasp the difference between the protocol, relays and clients and whatever other puzzle pieces there are in the mix.

Yeah, I've noticed some soft and hard porn leaning notes have popped up a few times around my timeline on #amethyst.

So, do I get it that amethyst is a client and someone created that on top of a relay they have control of?

A client is just the app that you use to access and interact with the protocol.

P.S. check this out https://nostr.com

You will have more understanding

yeah, i don't use amethyst, because right now i literally couldn't enter my nsec into it to log in, so i have plebstr on my phone instead

(yes i am not new to this cryptography thing ffs, i tried everything, and frankly i hate it and hearing what nostr:nprofile1qythwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnswf5k6ctv9ehx2ap0qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnyv9kh2uewd9hj7qgewaehxw309aex2mrp0yh8xmn0wf6zuum0vd5kzmp0qqsz7543nls5prmfac8fp8kcljkp8rzlxuxqth3y7rvrwzk6096jxgc34ad9e says about porn magically appearing on her feed tells me something)

there's quite a few prominent folk in this community who think things like not letting users properly filter their feed, or forcing them to accept this way or that, or making them upgrade when there's no real need to, are ok, a lot of toxic dev behaviors that i have come to loathe and despise in the wider IT community that are here

the point of mentioning that is that clients are part of the equation, and clients can impose a certain opinion on its users, and other clients are less opinionated, and don't force so many things or make so many assumptions

the same goes for relays, and some relays have more options, others have some strong opinions either way, and some are more neutral

so far i'm most happy with coracle.social and primal.net and as far as devs go, @hodlbod is the only one i know or interact with a lot, and nostr:nprofile1qy08wumn8ghj7mn0wd68yttsw43zuam9d3kx7unyv4ezumn9wshsz8mhwden5te0dehhxarj94ex2mrp0yhxummtda6xzun09e3k7mf0qythwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnwdaehgu3wvfskuep0qqswuyd9ml6qcxd92h6pleptfrcqucvvjy39vg4wx7mv9wm8kakyujgw3tmmj seems to be a pretty solid guy and i'd use his client except it isn't suited to my dev work

How does one run their own relay?

Thanks, I’ll look into it!
