Google Bard is now Gemini and can replace Google Assistant if you'd like to go down that path. I assume eventually that will happen automatically, without opt-in, as Google continues to flex their AI muscles.

I see no difference from Bard, besides a dedicated app and integration into my phone when I say "hey Google".
