except it doesn't line up with being called for a census in the middle of winter, it just doesn't line up

not only that, in spite of many further documents turning up in the last few hundred years there still isn't non-christian documents that even place the birth at the supposed AD 0

you may also have heard of a failed insurrection around that time, however, and the movie Life of Brian refers to this pretty much very directly (that's why it has so much politics in the story), and there is a matching story involving the roman governor not wanting to be the instrument of the frustration of the jewish nationalists who previously loved this guy until they arrested him

i personally think that it's much more likely that just as Lao Tzu/Chuang Tzu and Zoroaster and Guatama Siddhartha all showed up around the same time 2500 years earlier, that the entire thing is based on another person, from a much earlier era, and one of the most important things that most christians don't even know is that the majority of the famous sayings of Jesus actually come from Enoch! The catholics tried to outright erase enoch from the story, leaving only a tiny sliver in the Genesis book (which is greatly abridged compared to Jasher and Jubilees)

i don't think that this falsification of the historical features of the story makes any material difference, I believe there was a Jesus and the majority of the narrative is exactly as it says it is in the CATHOLIC compilation version, but it's got some pretty stark differences to other texts, and saying that the ancient romans had it more accurate than modern people can is absurd

The reason no documents place the birth of Christ at year 0 is because the monk who originally computed the date of Christ's birth made a miscalculation and was off by a few years. No one realized the mistake until centuries later, at which point it was too late to change the calendars.

Scholars agree today that Christ was born around 6 BC to 4 BC, before the death of Herod in 4 BC. It is also agreed he died around 27 BC.

All of this can be ascertained by cross-referencing non-Biblical sources that give the dates of historical figures that appear in the Gospels, particularly the officials of the Roman government at the time, which the evangelist Luke in particular carefully noted.
