Facts:

The United States of America was founded as a secular country.

The constitution contains no mention of Christianity or any specific religion and does not establish a national church. Article VI of the constitution prohibits religious tests for public office, “no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.”

Nearly all of the “founding fathers” practiced some form of Christianity.

Many of the families of the founding fathers were people who came to the states to escape religious persecution in their home countries. Governmental enforcement of religion was a big concern to these people. Jefferson stated that the American people built a “wall of separation between church and state.”

Timeline:

1776 - The declaration of independence was approved by congress.

1788 - The US constitution was ratified.

1792 - The first US coinage was minted containing no religious wording.

1864 - “In God We Trust” was added to the currency.

1954 - “Under God” was added to the pledge of allegiance.
