While I consider your argument, I'm curious about this: how much does it rely on a pervasive religion? How much are you weighting the "promise of treasures in the afterlife" in your presumptions about why people will be incentivized to act in the common good?

That's why we always had roads and cathedrals. It doesn't matter which God they worshipped or prophet they followed.
