There are many days I just want to get away from civilization and build a house in the woods with my hands.

Yestr. In the process of doing this. It’s the only thing that makes sense to me.

I'm trying to be nice to my wife and not strip our lifestyle from her, but if it ever gets really bad, I may have to make an executive decision.

I should probably still find somewhere as a "just in case". How did you pick your location?

I still haven’t picked a location yet. I am building houses as a general contractor and learning the tricks, making my mistakes, and hustling up the cash to execute my own compound in the near-future.

I am thinking Montana or Idaho will be a good bet though. Out of the way, tend to be less liberal and more hands off from a government standpoint. I’m not a republican either but I think red states are a way better bet than blues going forward in every regard.

A compound is exactly my goal too. Decent amount of like-minded people in my parts, if only we could collab on something like that.

My parents moved out to the woods when I was 7 from a shithole major city and it was the best decision they ever made for me and my brother. We grew up in paradise playing outside everyday and working on our property. I wouldn’t be the same had I grown up in the city, I’m sure of this.

We had 2 cottages on the same lake to visit for about 30yrs. My grandparents got divorced, remarried and ended up on the same lake…kinda weird looking back at it, but we were young and didn’t really know any better or really even care. We were very fortunate to spend a lot of time up north. Ever since both grandfathers (blood & step-grandfather) passed, the grandmas couldn’t do it on their own and both cottages were eventually sold.

I’ve been trying to find a cheap fixer cottage so my kids can experience what my brother and I experienced. It’s been far too long and I miss the fishing, boating/canoing, exploring etc. just the simplicity of it all. There’s nothing better than the great outdoors!

Hey look, that's my dream, too!

I don't have land yet, but due to a variety of circumstances, I'm living in an RV trailer that I'm modifying to be off grid capable.
