In the workforce, yes but in symbolic synonym only.
The, "I'm a machine" mentality applies to the sales(wo)man who realized that money doesn't sleep and is always ready for the next sale ... weekends, holidays, vacations, etc. Those people were animals to the baby boomers, but GenXers know animals sleep. Machines don't.
