OK what's the difference between these two Matrix apps?

I just want to join a room I've been asked to join. Which one do I download & use? Both?

Like nostr, there are multiple matrix apps. Element is the popular one.

What does the web-of-trust in Zapstore say for each app?

But these are two Element apps.

WoT on zapstore has both recommended

The matrix website has a comparison of clients if I remember correctly.

Element X is a more recent version while Element is feature complete to the Matrix protocol but it isn't optimized for speed. I went with X and it's stable and usable.

Great thank you

I think X is a beta for the new client intended to eventually replace the old one, but it's not fully ready, so both are available.

ElementX is the new one that leverages new features on the home servers to load recent messages very quickly. I haven't tried it yet. Still using the original Element client that sometimes loads new messages slowly, especially in busy rooms.

you need element x for video calls

Got it thank youđź’Ş

The Matrix Protocol leaks your metadata and it comes from Amdocs.

I'm not surprised

Can you share more details on this please?

"The initial project was created inside Amdocs...."

You should take a closer look at what they do:

In over 90 countries with more than 26,000 employees, they prepare mobile phone bills for more than half of the world's population and provide services for the mobile phone industry!

Mobile phone companies send them the connection data and Amdocs apparently only creates the bill.

This means that since the 1980s they have known who has been in contact with whom, how often, for how long and at what time!

So you can easily say that Amdocs is the world's first big metadata company. Even the USA went too far and in 1999 they tried to investigate the company and shut it down!

So we shouldn't be surprised if they now want to continue this metadata collection “passion” with messengers.

element collects MetaData

The Matrix Client Element even openly admits that they use metadata to profile users!

This is stated in their (non-)data protection declaration (under 2.2):

“... but we might profile metadata ...”

https://element.io/privacy

Sounds so harmless: “... but we might profile metadata....” = No, they certainly do.

Apparently “free” is NEVER free!

A quick reminder:

“Metadata tells you absolutely everything about a person's life. If you have enough metadata, you don't really need the content.”

Thanks for such detailed points 👍

I have used both before. This what I think the differences are.

Element X has all the new features and is under heavy development.

Element is more of the classic experience with a little more stability.

Both are resource hogs and ask for an obscene amount of permissions that I am not comfortable with.
