The right to free speech.
The right to bear arms.
Bodily rights.
The right to transact privately, in ideas, and monetarily.
Are all extremely important, but one thing I don’t read much about is mobility rights.
Find an Indian, listen to their stories, and ask yourself what you would do if you couldn’t move.
I would like to hear more about this subject, I am not informed enough to have a detailed opinion.
Lands and territories of many Indian nations were divided by the French and British when new territorial lines were drawn. Many peoples were no longer allowed to travel freely between them.
Many nations were moved onto reserves and no longer allowed to hunt on their traditional lands or move between their seasonal camps. Many were not allowed to leave their reserve without permission from the assigned Indian agent.
There are many other ways that mobility was restricted but it varies between each nation and the crown, and the treaties that had been negotiated.
Sorry to hear, sounds like a mess of central planning. Treaties that were negotiated before those now living were born. I look forward to hear more on the subject of native lands.
The Indian agents were some of the worst of the bunch. Crooked and corrupt. When most nations signed a treaty, they negotiated for a certain amount supplies to be delivered to the reserve, so that those who were forcibly moved onto reserves, had enough to avoid starvation. Since they weren’t allowed to leave without permission, and were not allowed to hunt, they were at the mercy of these agents.
The agents would take the supplies intended for Indians and sell them to settlers and only give them what was leftover. Rancid flour, spoiled meat, etc.
Thanks. At the time, I believe it was an intentional mess. Take away the means of survival, move people onto a contained piece of land, do not let them leave, and make them dependent on handouts. Threat eliminated and the freedom to take what you want. I suppose it’s not much different than what has always happened to the victors and the defeated.
