The storm wasn't as bad as they were trying to make it seem. :animu_smug8:
for instance: at KBDL (Bradley International, Connecticut) the winds are 10 kts (12 mph) from 010° and at 34000' MSL they are at 108 kts (124 mph) from 240°
usually the effects aren't quite as drastic as what you said but friction certainly does play a part
