I feel quite bad with this #zapping thing

I am not a bitcoiner.. I have none and never had any..Hardly even know things about it..I didn't even put that wallet till people told me to do..

And now when people zap me here I don't know what should I do..

If this is all about zapping here.. Then I mignt be on a wrong place.. I must say I am confused..

I also don't quite get the zapping frenzy.

I canโ€™t zap you ๐Ÿ˜œ

๐Ÿ˜‚.. I figured out what you made.. That's enough from me..

Thank you..

Itโ€™s a different take on where/how value changes hand in a social media context.

In the legacy social media world users attract eyeballs with their post and the platform sells those views to advertisers. So itโ€™s kind of this weird value triangle that a lot of people think contributes greatly to the toxicity you see as a result of those platforms. The incentives arenโ€™t aligned between platform, poster, and viewer.

On nostr, we are attempting to simplify and correct those value incentives. Our idea is to simplify remove the platform from the value triangle. Make value flow directly from poster to viewer. We think this will better align our incentives and remove a lot of the resulting toxicity. Itโ€™s also only possible with Bitcoin and lightning.

Nostr isnโ€™t โ€œall about zappingโ€, but zapping is certainly *one of* its most profound innovations.

Whatโ€™s not to like about it? (Honest question)

Thank you so much for the time and the explanation Dan..

I got that.. We are all fed up with things on social networks.. And the biggest problem is the result of it's impact on life..

Decreased values in every corner of the world...

I also understand what you are trying to do here and I really appreciate that..

Been here for about 10 days..Probably not enough to judge.. But I am feeling uncomfortable.. All at once surrounded with lightnings, lazers, bitcoins, sparkles..etc etc..a bit offensive for the eyes even.. I hope you understand me.. Dont want to hurt people.. Just describing the feeling.. Among all.. People just talking about zapping.. There are some ivents or so.. People offer.. People ask in return..

People come up with tasks..etc etc.. People on the other side chase..

All about zapping..all about sats..

I feel very uncomfortable.. As I can't give them sats..

Don't forget..unfortunately.. We all have to keep on our minds.. We can change the network or the protocol.. But we can't change people..

The idea is very nice.. But I don't want to chase sats.. I don't want people to avoid me cause I don't have them.. I dont.. Maybe in time.. No.. I will always feel obliged to return a favour..The gap between I want and I am not able is frustrating.. That's the point..

I hear you and totally understand your point. I think a lot of what your feeling is simply because this network is still so small; it's attracted like minded people that are into similar topics (Bitcoin/freedom/etc). If you're not passionate about those things I could totally see how it being EVERYWHERE could be off-putting. I think that problem will slowly solve itself over time, but nevertheless, it's a very understandable feeling on your end.

Hashtags like #grownostr are our attempt at branching out to other topics, but still totally get your point.

The #zapathon event you're referring to was originally to give people like yourself (new to Bitcoin) a way to get some sats for free so that they could participate in this new idea. I agree it's kinda turned into a weird frenzy at this point. But it has imo very wholesome intentions.

I wouldn't worry about people not wanting to interact with you because you don't use zaps. Zaps are just a form of appreciation. But we still appreciate good discussion - zaps or no zaps - like what's happening here! ๐Ÿ˜

p.s. if you have any interest in sending zaps, your wallet seem to be working. Depending on which app you are using I wouldn't mind explaining how to set up the ability to send. Just an offer, no worries if you are not interested

Dear Dan..

Sorry for the delay..

You are very generous and all these things do help me to understand the idea. Thank you so much for the time and understanding as well.

From what I've been able to see so far.. You all made a completely new subculture through years of bitcoin existence. That is marvelous..I wasn't aware of that..really..

On the other side from my point of view it's also a bit closed group..People like me will need much more time to adjust..

So..my question is.. How #nostr and your subculture are connected?

In general.. What I see here is.. One side.. Developers and etc working on this protocol in and out and on the other side bitcoiners..

I read both sides and I don't get a thing.. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ It's ok..I will mind my business..

If #nostr has been built by your subculture and for it at the very beginning.. Be gentle to dummies like I am..๐Ÿ˜‚

Or if you are making a completely new cultural identity of #nostr be aware that impact of bitcoin is so big that most of the people will feel the way I feel..

All in all.. I am not complaining at all..

I expressed my feelings..and I was completely honest..

All of your ideas are really great and I will support you to implement them here in the best possible way..

The #zapping thing will continue to bother me..till I find the way to earn them outside of nostr for to invest them here.. ๐Ÿ˜…

Oh.. I tried.. my wallet works..sent one to that Bezos account and then asked him politely to give it back to me..but he didn't.. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

To show you.. I'll send back what you gave me.. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thanks so much!!!

Hey nostr:npub1cpg5tqql4fwgyddxejwyq3lxezxrjxxfmta6xlmhgfhhdl6ffdkqpdy4rt sorry for the delay!

You're totally correct about Bitcoin subculture and nostr subculture being largly one and the same today.

Best way to explain this is to talk about the goals of each technology and the type of people that those goals attract.

Bitcoin was invented because Satoshi saw that trusting a central authority to produce and control all money was an inherently bad idea. Bad for freedom: it's a lot of power and power is abused. And bad functionally: nobody is smart enough to actively manage the money supply to benefit the people (the system is far too complex).

Nostr was invented because fiatjaf saw that trusting a centralized social media authority to grant or block speech on the Internet was an inherently bad idea. Bad for freedom: freedom of speech is a fundamental human right. And bad functionally: no organization can manage speech in a way that doesn't piss off users and their advertisers

The types of people that see the value in one almost always see the value in the other. Because of that, the subcultures are super intertwined.

I do think over time enough cool stuff will be built on nostr that it will attract users for simply being a better experience. At which point you will see the space much less dominated by bitcoiners. But we aren't there yet. And that core ethos will remain super important if nostr is to survive.

I think I have nothing to say..

I will just try to paint your words with some verses.. ๐Ÿ˜‰

"... Oh people...

How we dare to call ourselves humans

Once we are born

The world belongs to all of us

But yet...

The embrace some never feel

The freedom some never live

The music of love some never hear...

Aren't we all equally welcomed

In this cruel world

World where life never survives..."

P. S. Can somebody tell me what's "fiat" for God sake..? ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Love the verses

fiat - an authoritative or arbitrary order : DECREE

In the context of Bitcoin and money when people say "fiat" they are shortening "fiat currency". Fiat currency is a newer form of money where the money only has value because an authority forces people to use it and the authority controls the supply of said money.

Oh "dekretni novac" got it..thats the term we use here..but rarely anybody speaks about it..

Thank so much Dan!

Give it some time. We're here early.
